Decisions, Decisions

In Chapter 25 we learn about an interesting decision that Winnie made.  She decided to pour the everlasting water on the toad so he is safe forever.  Did this choice surprise you, why or why not?  Why do you think Winnie made this choice?  Why was the toad so significant in her life that she felt she needed to protect him forever?

Then in the Epilogue we ultimately learn of Winnie’s decision regarding drinking the water.  She chose not the drink the water when she’s 17 and lived her life.  Did this choice surprise you, why or why not? What do you think were the reasons behind Winnie’s choice?  Would you have made the same decision, why or why?

When she poured the water on the frog it didn’t surprise me. She loved that toad no matter how useless it was. I think she poured the water on the frog because it was important to her and it was to small to live a ling life, for example when it was about to get crushed by the dog. It couldn’t do anything to save himself so she brought him inside the fence and poured the water on him. She knew that if she wanted to drink the water she could get more by the tree. She felt she needed the toad because he was the only thing that she could talk to about anything and know he won’t tell.
Lauren had said that Winnie’s choice of not drinking the water when she was 17 surprised her. It surprised me too. I totally thought she would drink the water because she loved him and she wanted to be with him. I think she didn’t because of the boat ride with Tuck. Tuck said that your life is like a ferries wheel and when you drink it you get thrown off and become a pebble on the side of the rode. You are stuck in time forever and never change or die. I would have not drank the water because I wouldn’t want to be stuck in time forever and watch the people around be rot and crumble and die and me stay alive. I would want to live a normal life like everyone else and not have a family like Miles’ that ran away because I didn’t change.

Yes, the choice suprised me. It suprised me because Why would you give a toad the water to live forever. If you had a true love waiting till you were 17 years old, dont you think you would drink the water and marry him when you are 17. I think Winnie made this choice because she had a empty spot in her heart and gave that empty spot to the toad. I also think that she wanted him to live forever because she felt like it was her pet and would you want your pet to die?
The choice that winnie desided, suprised me. It suprised me because her true love asked her to marry her and she didnt she choice to give the water to the toad. If I had the choice to give a toad the water or drink it and live forever with my true love. I would because you would have to keep moving so you would never know when your friends or family members died or got hurt/sick very badly, that they had to go to the emergency room.

AlexI. said that winnies choice didnt surprise her because no mater what, Winnie loved the toad and the toad was to small to live a long live. So that is why she gave the toad the water. I agrree with her that Winnie will always love the toad, but i dont agree with her that she wasnt surprised.

  4.    Anthony — December 16, 2009 @ 4:44 pm

I was not suprised when she used the water on the toad. Hovever I did thing it was bit strange. I was expecting that she would not marry Jesse and i also expected an unexpected turn. The toad is probaly so important because the toad is verey similar to being a friend that Whinnie could talk to. She could not bear to watch the dog masacre the defenceless toad she felt is needed to be protected. She also said that if she did decide to marry Jesse she would go back to the spring and get more water when she was seventeen.

    Question 2

No, Whinnie’s choice did not suprise me at all. She realized that the pros outwighted the cons of imortality. I onehundred percent agree with her disicion. Refuring back to my last comment about her diciding to drink the water I think that both of our reasons are similar. What is the point of living if you can not enjoy life’s changes. I would want to grow old and live my life. I also agree with what Tuck said that when you hear about it sounds fun but when it is happening it is nothing short of a curse. It would probably be better to live a short happy life than a never ending missarable one. It is just like what they say when someone dies “they are in a better place. This is my reasoning behind agreeing with Whinnie about weather or not to drink the water.

    Question 1

The choice that Winnie made to pour the water on the frog surprised me!I thought when she was 17 then she will drink it! the choice that she made surprised me a lot.I think the reason is because when winnie was alone the toad wazs almost always there for her and that is what friends kind of do.They look out for each other.I think she ment if I can have everlasting life why can’t the toad to.Then the dog will not bother the toad because I am guessing the dog wanted to eat or kill it or something like that. Now the frogy can not be bothered because of Winnie.I also think that winnie thought About what the tucks family had said about the water and how the tucks are stuck right there.
    Stuck staying right there.
Exactly like siting rocks that never change. NEVER…….

I thought that the choice that Winnie made was surprising becasue she just gave up the chance to be immortal. The toad deserved the Water though because he was going to get killed by the dog that was at Winnie’s fence.I think that Winnie made the choice of giving the toad the water from the spring because the toad was Winnie’s only friend she coud talk to when the Tucks left town.So to be able to have a friend still Winnie would have to pour the water on the toad to save him from dying from a dog that was barking at the toad and trying to bite the toad up.The toad was so important to Winnie because the toad was the only person who listened to Winnie and listened to what she had to say. She wanted the toad to live forever because when she needed somebody to talk to the toad would be there to listen.

The part where Winnie Foster does not drink the water was suprising to me because she just gave up the only chance she had to be with Jesse Tuck and the Tucks forever. I think she made that decision because she saved an animal that the animal was a toad but not just a toad he was Winnie’s toad friend when the Tucks went away.Another reason could be because she could of just wanted to live a normal life and to live a long and happy life so that she would no that she did the right thing and she woul always be happy with that even when she dies.I would of made the same decision because I would want to live a normal life too and to give the water to something or someone who really needs it more than I would need it.

  8.    Mayuki♪(l v l) — December 16, 2009 @ 7:31 pm

The choice Winnie took, to pour the water on the toad, surprised me a lot. It surprised me because I thought she was going to keep it as Jesse’s memory, since she liked him. That would probably end up as a great treasure, if I saved it as a memory of some one I loved. I think Winnie made that choice because she thanked him for making her promise that she was going to run away. If she didn’t promise the toad that she was going to run away, Winnie would never have met the Tucks. Same thing to why the toad was so significant that she wanted to save it forever. I think she was really happy that she and the Tucks have met, and if the toad did not make her promise that she would run away, because that is how Jesse and Winnie met, which was probably Winnie’s first love. If toad was not there, the story might not have taken place.
I am against Alex’s sayings, it didn’t surprise me, because I thought she was not going to drink the water any way. If Winnie had drunk the water, she would be with Jesse forever who was probably her first love, but she would never have met that Jackson person she married, and she would’ve had to leave her own family to be with the Tucks which would have been pretty hard; leaving her family that raised her until she was 17, the parents that would’ve wanted her to live a right, happy, fulfilled life. I think Winnie’s reason behind Winnie’s choice was that following Angus’ words, she didn’t want to break the world’s life cycle and she wanted to live a full life. If she had drunk the water and stayed with Jesse, if she divorced, she would have no one to be with and nowhere to be. Also, she might meet some one she likes more than Jesse. I would have done the same thing Winnie did because I would want to age, love, have friends and eventually die. It will be hard for me not to die, and I wouldn’t want to live forever because I would not be able to make friends since they will age and I won’t.

  9.    Sydney: i hate the ending!!!!!!!!! — December 16, 2009 @ 7:34 pm

i agree with Alex, it didn’t surprise me either, that Winnie poured the water on the toad. Winnie did care for that useless toad. Again i agree with Alex that she poared the water on the toad because she cared for it and that it was to small to live a long life. I also think htat she poared the water on the toad because she wanted it to be able to learn to survive on it”s own. Like the example Alex used, when he was about to get smushed by the dog, it didn’t stick up for it self. The toad was signifigent in her life that it was so important that she had to pour the water on it because, if it weren’t for the toad , she would never had met the Tuck’s. The toad was the one who made her realize that she needed freedom, so she ran away, and bumed into Jesse Tuck.
Winnie’s decision to not drink the water when she is seventeen, and marry Jesse, like Alex and Lauren, surprised me a lot. Like Alex said it surprised me because she loved him since the first time they had lay eyes on each other. Like Alex said she thought that Winnie made her decission to not drink the water was all because the boat ride with Miles. He said it was hard to see loved ones leave. I wouldn”t have made the same decission as Winnie. My decission would be to drink the water and marry Jesse Tuck. I would make this decission because i hate the fact of dying. Another reason for my decisson is that I wouldn’t want to leave Jesse hanging.I hated the ending of the book. I hated it because it ended with Winnie dying, I had to prevent myself from sobbing. As i wiped my tears i completely hated the author for making Winnie do this. It was awful. I hate how books have bad endings!

When she poured the water on to the toad, I was kind of surprised that she did it. I thought she would turn 17 and drink it so she could be with Jesse. I think Winnie made this choice because she wanted the toad to be safe so she poured it on it, and she had more water in the woods so she could go there and get more water. Winnie wanted the toad because it was her only friend besides the Tucks and she needed to protect it forever because she wanted the toad to be just like the Tucks.

This choice about her drinking the water did not surprise me because when Angus Tuck told her about the life cycle and how there are like rocks beside the road she probably didn’t want that to happen to her so she decided not to drink the water. One part in the story surprised me that when Miles and Winnie were fishing. They caught a trout, but the looks of the trout made Winnie feel terrible so she wanted Miles to throw it back in the water. If I was in this situation I would not drink the water, because if I drink the water I would have to live forever and see my friends die and more. There won’t be any point in my life if I drank the water. This is my decision if I was in the same situation.

I also agree with Mayuki that we won’t be able to make any friends with other people because we won’t age and they will.

  11.    Amy — December 17, 2009 @ 4:08 pm

I was surprised when she poured the water to a toad, because it was the water from Jesse, and I thought that she is going to choose either drinking it or not when Winnie becomes seventeen. And I thought that she is going to keep water in the bureau drawer till she becomes seventeen, because I thought that she liked Jesse, and she thought that she could live with Tucks forever, like Jesse proposed. In this, I agree with Mayuki who said she thought that Winnie would keep the water because she liked Jesse, and be with him.
I think Winnie made this choice because the toad which she loved because it was friendly and familiar was being bothered by a mean dog. And the book said, “And then, on an impulse, she turned and ran into the cottage, up to her room.” I think she couldn’t help the toad herself, so she wanted to protect him forever.
I think the toad was significant to her life because the toad came out and hear Winnie’s story when she was alone, and when she needed friend at the “touch-me-not” cottage. And I think it was significant because the toad gave her a courage to go out, and she made the difference in the world after helping Mae from the prison. And meet Tuck family. Like Winnie said, “It’s my toad, So you’d better leave it alone.” It was “her toad” who heard her story, and make her tell her story. I think she thought of a toad as a friend and as a pet, or a sister or a brother. And she missed the toad and cared about him when she was at the Tucks house or when she thought that the toad look tired and thirsty.
I wasn’t surprised when she didn’t drink the water and died, because I knew that when she gave the water out to the toad that she decided that she won’t drink the water slightly in her mind. “There was plenty more. Just in case.” If she wanted to, she could drink the water, but I knew that she doesn’t feel the need of the water.
I think she made this choice because she felt that living forever was lot more serious than Jesse thought from Miles’ sad story, and the conversation with Angus Tuck. And from Mae, who killed man in the yellow suit. Mae had meant to kill him, I think Winnie realized that the water shouldn’t ever be found. It was refusing the nature. Everything had to change. And she lived her life as a wife, as a mother, as the time goes on. And eventually Winnie left the place for other people coming up.
Even if I was Winnie, I wouldn’t drink the water. Everything has to change, following the wheel, smoothly. And soon, passing by. Because it is the way the nature made, if it wasn’t, it would be too selfish. Man in the yellow suit couldn’t see what would happen, and didn’t want to know that because he was too busy to get what he want.
And I am not going to wander around like Tucks when my relatives are gone.

  12.    Jasmine Yoo — December 17, 2009 @ 5:08 pm

I totally agree with Anthony! I wasn’t surprised by Winnie’s choice. I think that Winnie poured her precious spring water on the toad because… well, she loved him. Also when the dog tried to hurt the toad in Chapter 25 Winnie tried to protect him. She wanted the toad to be safe. When Winnie was talking the toad respected her and stayed and listened. I think that Winnie felt so appreciated that she wanted to give the toad a little something. When I first read the book by myself long time ago, I did not feel this way. I thought that Winnie was going to drink the water when she was 17 and get married with Jesse. When I finished the book, I wanted to rewrite the ending. I wanted Jesse and Winnie to get married. Now I know that living forever and never dying is not always the best choice. If you drink the water, you will never be able to change or grow. I thought that the ending was beautifully written with the toad with the end. I liked how Angus Tuck’s quote was written in the epilogue. “Durn fool thing must think it’s going to live forever,” he said to Mae. It reminded me of when Winnie poured the water on the toad. It made him safe forever. As it says it Chapter 25, “The little bottle was empty now. It lay on the grass of Winnie’s feet. But if all was true, there was more water in the wood. There was plenty more. Just in case. When she was seventeen. If she should decide, there was more water in the wood. Winnie smiled. Then she stooped and put her hand through the fence and set the toad free. “There!” she said. “You’re safe. Forever.” That touched my heart.

When Winnie gave the water to the toad, it surprised me. I didn’t know that Winnie would make a choice like that. I was expecting she was going to drink the water when she was 17 and marry Jesse Tuck. I think she made this decision because Tuck talked her out of it by comparing themselves as rocks on the side of a road. Nothing would ever happen to them. They would not grow or die and experience any life changing events. They would not die, grow up, or even live through all the parts of life. They would not even feel or experience pain ever again.
She gave the water to the toad because the toad was her first real friend. The toad would listen to her problems and questions. The toad was in the danger of death. Like when the dog tried to kill it. In reward for being Winnie’s friend, he got the spring water of immortality.
Winnie’s choice surprised me because Winnie had strong feelings for Jesse and I thought she would go and live with him forever until the end of time. She chose not to drink the water because of Tuck’s warning and she did NOT want to live the same life over and over again with the same person.
I would choose the same decision because just like her, I would not like to live the same life over and over again.

  14.    Lynn K. Per 5-6 — December 17, 2009 @ 5:26 pm

This choice that Winnie made did not surprise me. I had a feeling coming that she was going to do so on the toad. It didn’t surprise me because earlier in the book she had wished that nothing could die. She thought each creature was special in it’s own way. She especially wanted the toad to have the water because earlier the toad was near to death. The dog might have injured it or killed it. Winnie wanted the toad to be safe from harm or anything that might harm the toad. She did not want the toad to die. She wanted to see the toad everyday she lived. She didn’t want to waste the water either. The toad was very important to her because it was her only friend. Beside the Tucks she really had no friends. She felt that the toad was always there beside her.
Again her choice not to drink the water did not surprise me. I new in the end she was going to realize that there’s no meaning to life if it’s never going to end. She took the right chance by not drinking the water. Angus Tuck was proud of her because she listened to him about not drinking the water. That it wasn’t a blessing to begin with. That it would be a bad decision. That’s why he said “good girl” at the end even though he was heartbroken. I think Winnie chose not to drink the water in the end because when she really thought about it, there could be no coming back. No redo. She could be stuck in all eternity. She really thought about it and said, you know what? I may not live forever, but at least I will live my life of what I already have. It isn’t natural for people to live forever. It is not a need. If I was in Winnie’s situation, I would probably do the same as her. I would also choose not to live for all eternity because it is not natural. I would not want to explore the world forever. Sure i would explore the world with the time given to me. And when it’s my time to go i would go. I wouldn’t want to stay forever and watch my loved ones die. It isn’t something I’m supposed to live for to see. I would want to live my life knowing that at the end i could have chose to live forever but be glad it’s coming to an end.

  15.    Lynn K. Per 5-6 — December 17, 2009 @ 5:30 pm

I do not agree with Nicole because if you really think about it, Winnie was a sweet little girl. She may have wanted to go off with Jesse herself, but when she came to seventeen she knew that it wasn’t her place to drink it. Since this is an opinion question, i also respect Nicole about thinking that who would, in their right mind refuse to drink the everlasting water?!?! It makes sense when you really think about it. I could go both ways.

The choice Winnie made really did not surprise me! I did not like her decision, I was upset by it. I think Winnie poured the water on the toad because she loved it, and it listen to her when she had problems. I think that the toad was very useless to be an honest. I think Winnie made this choice because she would tell him something about her life and he would not tell. I think the toad was Winnie’s first friend before the Tucks came around in the book. Winnie felt like she needed to protect the toad because again it was her first friend. Also she loved him.

The choice Winnie made about not drinking the water when she was seventeen really did surprise me. I was extremely upset. I was upset because her and Jesse make a cute couple. Well as the author described them. I think the reasons behind it was that one life is meant to be lived and not to be like rocks on the side of the road. (As Tuck out it.) And two it will be really boring staying the same age and looking the same way. Again I am undecided. I really don’t know what decision I would make because Jesse is very cute and I would be able to live forever. But that one quote that Tuck said really got me thinking. “We are like rocks on the side of the road. Stuck!” What Tuck said. And another reason why I would not drink is that it will be super boring and I get bored very easily.

  18.    Eman Al-yousefy — December 17, 2009 @ 6:30 pm

    Eman Al-yousefy

The decision that Winnie made really surprised me because although she loved the toad, it would be unusual to give an animal immortality by pouring the everlasting water on it. I thought it changed Winnie because it made Winnie think that there are many other things and people that deserve the water like helpless animals at the bottom of a food chain that have a higher chance of getting killed. I think Winnie made this choice because a couple times in the story Winnie talked to the toad to find an answer although she knew that the toad won’t answer her, she thought it would help her think about the answer herself by imagining that the toad could talk to her. She needed help and she knew that the toad will not tell but she believed that the toad understood her like she is talking to a friend. The toad was there for Winnie, now Winnie will be there for it by pouring the water on the toad. Also, because the dog was going to kill the toad and Winnie realized that every life has value. To Winnie, saving the toad is important and she thought that the toad deserved to live forever.

Winnie’s choice not to drink the water did not surprise me much because Tuck’s inspiration encouraged Winnie not to drink the water and I did not expect her to drink the water. He said “But dying is part of the wheel”. I was happy to find out that Winnie did not drink the water. Winnie knew what she had to do and she knew that dying as a part of nature was the best thing to choose. I also believe that Winnie didn’t drink the water because she didn’t want to betray her family by drinking the water and leaving them for Jesse. Before I read the book I wanted to drink the water but know that I read on and found out that it is better to grow and live normally and naturally.

  19.    Jack per 5-6 — December 17, 2009 @ 6:32 pm

The choice that Winnie made surprised me but it also didn’t surprise me. I knew she had feelings for the toad, however I was not expecting Winnie to waste the whole bottle of water on the toad. Maybe Winnie knew that there was a whole spring full of the water that makes you live forever. I think Winnie made this choice because the toad was the one who lead her leading into running away because she wanted freedom like him which is why she ran away. At this point, Winnie probably did not want to go with Jesse’s plan of drinking the water when she was seventeen. Winnie poured the water on the toad because like I said, he or she (whatever the toad is) led her to running away in the first place, without the toad, none of this would have happened. Winnie would have still been living her normal life and she would not have made a difference in the world like she said she wanted to. So basically without the toad, none of this would have happened so Winnie probably wanted to repay the toad. This choice did not surprise me because if she wanted to go with Jesse, the person who she loved and do his plan with drinking the water when she was seventeen she would have said yes to that right away. That was one of the only good things about drinking the water other than obviously living forever and never feeling any pain. One reason I think Winnie did not end up drinking the water is because she saw how the Tucks had to live and how you always had to be on the move and you could not have any friends. Winnie probably did not want to have to live that way. Her family was wealthy so she probably got o live a happy sucessful life and had a nice family unlike the Tucks. It would be a hard decision for me to choose to drink the water or not but I would probably end up not drinking it. I would want to live a normal and to have friends and be able to not have to always be moving. I also agree with whaty Alex said about having a family and not having them run away like what happened to Miles…I think Winnie made a good decision!

  20.    HAtice :D — December 17, 2009 @ 6:36 pm

Yes. Her choice really surprised me. Her choice surprised me because come on, it’s just a toad she found next to her home. It’s not technically even her pet, why would anyone pour precious water like that over a toad you barely know or even see? I think Winnie made this choice because the toad was her friend and she liked the toad. If her pouring the water on the toad for nothing was the case, I think that would’ve just been crazy. I think she felt like she needed to protect the toad because besides the Tucks, the toad is her only friend that is on the other side of the fence, that explores the forest instead of being in the house all day doing nothing.
Winnie’s decision of not drinking the water surprised me a lot. It surprised me because I thought she would drink the water when she was seventeen and marry Jesse.
In the book it mentioned that Winnie had feelings for Jesse, that basically, she liked him. I think the reason behind Winnie’s choice was all the bad things the Tucks had told her about the water. I think Winnie listened to what they said about it and decided not to drink the water, and instead, live a happy life unlike the Tucks, who are like rocks. If I were in Winnie’s shoes I wouldn’t pour the water over the toad and let it live a normal life. Then, when I was seventeen, I would have drunk the water and go looking for the Tucks. I would explore the world with them and, of course live forever. (\/)

I agree with Nicole completely. Why would Winnie do such a thing? Actually, I don’t really agree with Nicole on the not drinking the water and living a normal life thing. I would drink the water and keep moving if I have to, saying goodbye to my family members first without them knowing there is a magical water-or telling them and asking them if they want to drink too.

  22.    Austin Cho 5/6 — December 17, 2009 @ 7:18 pm

    Question:4

Winnie’s choice of pouring the water of immortality on the toad surprised me because I thought she was going to keep the water for some occasion when she needed it. I think Winnie made this choice because the toad was her friend from the beginning of the book and it was her first friend. The toad was important to Winnie that she gave him the water because it listened to whatever Winnie said or asked. The toad almost got bitten/killed by a dog, so maybe Winnie just wanted to save the toad’s life and she knew she had more water where that came from so why not save your first real friend, a toad.

When Winnie did not drink the water it didn’t surprise me because I didn’t think it would be the right choice to live forever with a person who kidnapped you even if you have feelings for them. I think Winnie made this choice because of Angus Tuck “talk” about how he didn’t want her to end up like them and comparing them to rocks on the side of a road, that didn’t change or move like the rest of the world. Another reason that steered her away from that option is that maybe she found somebody she like even more. If I were in Winnie’s situation I would do the same thing because I would never get to live the rest of your life. Plus what would you do if you end up like the Tucks moving from place to place and never having a place you can call your permanent home. If you wanted to die you couldn’t.

  23.    Veer — December 17, 2009 @ 7:21 pm

Yep, this choice had more then ever suprised me because i never knew she would give the water to a toad. Well, its just like the author said, things come together in strange ways indeed. She probaly gave the frog the water because she didnt like animals dieing and she knew she wasnt going to drink it anyways. Winnie had a nice characteristic and wanted stuff to be free so i think that is the reason of her giving the “toad” the water.I was suprised when i had found out at the end that she didnt drink the water at seventeen. I always thought that since she has feelings for Jesse, she would marry him. All along the book after Jesse proposes first time i always had feeling they would get married. I think Winnie did not drink the water when she was seventeen because she wanted to be free and live a happy life and like being “rocks on the side of the road”. Another reason is probaly (not sure) she fell in love with someone else. I kinda guess now after reading the book and seeing miles’s and tuck’s point of view of living forever, i say NO. I would not drink the water. Just like Tuck said, Rocks on the side of a road. And i dont want to be that while everyone is moving along in their own pace while im just stuck in the cycle of life. Just from two peoples point of view, i have become from yes to No.

The fact that Winnie poured the water on the toad didn’t really surprise me. I actually kind of suspected it. This didn’t surprise me because she had always loved the toad like someone as part of her family. An example from the text would be when the dog was trying to hurt the toad, Winnie saved the toad. She specifically said, ‘my toad’ and that shows the significance between Winnie and the toad. Ever since the beginning of the book, the toad had always been there when Winnie was feeling aggravated or discouraged. An example would be the time when Winnie was pondering about her choice to run away or not. The toad lives a short life. It lives without safety and protection. Winnie could clearly see that when it couldn’t defend itself against the dog she knew she had to take action and make another difference in the world.
When Tuck discovered that Winnie had not drank from the spring I was quite surprised. This event surprised me because Winnie was obviously attracted to Jesse and I thought she might want to spend, well forever, with Jesse and travel and watch the world change in front of her eyes.
I think that Winnie ended up not drinking the water because after the night when Tuck talked to her about the situation she understood what Tuck meant by the ‘motionless rocks on the side of the road’. Tuck really persuaded Winnie about her decision. I also think she didn’t drink from the spring because she wanted to live a long but happy life. She wanted to have kids and live normally. Winnie knows that if the secret got out that it would cause chaos, so that might be part of the reason. She also decided not to drink from the water because she might want to die just like Angus Tuck. She definitely knew that there was more bad than good. She would suffer a miserable eternity of pain. That is why I think she didn’t drink from the spring.
I myself probably would’ve done the same thing as Winnie. I know the consequences of some decisions and how hard they can penalize you.

I agree with Anthony. He’s got a very solid response! Like he said, the pros outweighed the cons and that she made the right decision to not drink the water. Anthony also said that drinking the water would not be a blessing, but a curse.

Yes this superbly surprised me because I thought she would drink the water at seventeen, then go look for the Tucks, marry Jesse, and live happily ever after. I think Winnie Foster made this choice because she could get more water in the wood and her friend, the Toad, was just about to be eaten, shredded to little tiny bits, etc., by the dog that just randomly came down the street. The toad was so significant in Winnie Foster life that she felt she needed to protect him forever because the toad was her friend!!!!!!!!

I have to agree with Veer that this surprised him and me.

This choice surprise me because like I said Yes this superbly surprised me because I thought she would drink the water at seventeen, then go look for the Tucks, marry Jesse, and live happily ever after.

I think were the reasons behind Winnie’s choice were that she had more of the water, she felt that the Toad could have been killed or slaughtered so she poured the vile (fancy word for a bottle) over the Toad. Yes I would you have made the same decision because I would feel extremely bad for the Toad.

So these are my own answers for these questions and I am going to stick with them 100 percent. Thank you for reading my response to discussion question #4.

    BYE!!! =) =) =) =)

When Winnie poured the water on the toad it surprised me because I didn’t realize how much she liked the toad and I think she liked it so much was because it was almost like her friend and she liked the toad. That is why I think the toad was so significant in her life. I think she wanted the toad to live forever because she had feelings for the toad and it was helpless when the dog attacked it and she didn’t want the toad to die.
When I found out that Winnie had chosen not drink the water I was not surprised that Winnie didn’t want to live forever because what the Tucks had explained to her about living for ever and how it wasn’t as great as it sounded. She ended up living to about 78 years old which is a nice long life for someone she did not marry Jesse but she did get married to someone else. If I was in Winnie’s shoes I would not of drunken the water because living to 78 is a pretty decent age for me and a life well spent also I don’t think I would be happy seeing all my loved ones pass away and myself staying the same and not growing. My opinion of the ending was I was a little in the middle but I liked the choice of Winnie not drinking the water and how Treegap came to be and the spring had been dug up and nobody had realized it.

    Erin Hahn Periods 5-6

Winnie’s decision of pouring the water on the toad surprized me. I did not think the toad meant that much to her. I think she really didn’t want the toad to die, because in an earlier chapter it said that she cried for a wasp that she killed, and didn’t want the turtles to eat the frogs. She didn’t want anything to die, and in her worry for the toad she probably did the one thing she could think of to save its life. The toad is so significant in her life because it was there for her when she was lonely and it stayed and seemed like it listened to her. Winnie saw the toad watching her when she ran away (kind of). She believes the toad came to watch her all the time.

The new choice Winnie made about not drinking the water did not surprize me. I didn’t think she would drink the water, and I wouldn’t. I think one of the reasons for her choice was that maybe she fell in love with some guy with the last name Jackson. Another reason could have been her talk with Tuck, or her trip with Miles to go fishing that made her not do it too. I would not drink the water, because I know the ups AND downs about being immortal, and there are a lot more downs. Theres keeping the secret, moving around, and let’s not forget grandmothers thinking you’re an elf. (;-))

I agree with Jack that the toad was important to Winnie because without the toad none of what happened to Winnie would happen.:)

  30.    Deep period 5-6 — December 17, 2009 @ 8:33 pm

I was not suprised when Winnie poured the everlasting water on the toad because, Winnie started talking to the toad at the begining of the book. I think Winnie made this choice because she really didn’t feel like losing another friend. The toad frog was so important in Winnie’s life because she could release her feelings to the toad and Winnie can be not anybody but herself; and that is why Winnie thought the toad was so important.

Winnie did not drink the water andthat did not suprise me because I wanted her not to drink the water because if she did, she would have ruined her life and felt like rocks on the side of the road and she would also not find a point of loving anymore just like Angus Tuck. I think Winnie chose not to drink the water because she wanted to live a normal life like living, being happy, then dieing. Another reason that Winnie didn’t drink the water was that she didn’t want to be bord her whole life because if she drank the water she would be bord her WHOLE life. Another reason ccould of been that Winnie realised that she really loved her family and she didn’t want to run away or see them die. I would have made the same choice because I wouldn’t want to be bord my whole life and my forever never ending life. I also would of choice the same way Winnie did because, I would not want to run away becasue I would have to run away so that the news doesn’t spread and it would be awful to see my family members come and go.

I agree with Chris because I also do think the ending was so so because Winnie didn’t drink the water but I dont like how she gave the water to the toad.

  31.    Eman Al-yousefy — December 17, 2009 @ 8:42 pm

I agree with Samantha when she said that she would keep the water with her as a memory because in the book it stated that she had feelings for Jesse and he said that him and Miles won’t be back for a long time. So Winnie probably thought that the bottle could be her treasure that she would keep with her and when she sees it, it will remind her of Jesse.

  32.    Katarina — December 17, 2009 @ 9:11 pm

Yes Winnes choice did surprise me.I didnt think she was going to give it to the toad. I thought she was maybe going to get hung accidentaly but jesse would go and save her.I didnt think she was going to get caught by the constable. I think Winnie made this choice because she wanted the toad to live forever and tohught of what angus tuck said about living forever and you dont know till you drink the water.
I think Winnie gave the water to the toad because she cared for it even though the only thing she does is talk to it when she is lonely.
I wouldnt of gave it to the toad.I would of kept it till i was seventeen and go live with jesse.
This choice did surprise me I really didnt think she would of gave the water to the toad. But she chose to live her life and not live forever. I dont think that was a good choice that she made because , i mean who wouldnt want to live forever and not die. I mean i wouldnt want to die because there is so much too see and do.
But then again she made a good choice because what if somthing went wrong with her and jesse where would she go because she doesnt no anyone else that drank the everlasting water so she would want to die.Maybe if she got bored and lonely without jesse in her life she would want to die and not want to live forever. That is what i thought. I DIDNT LIKE THE ENDING AT ALL!

  33.    Lorraine Moffitt — December 17, 2009 @ 9:52 pm

I agree with Alex I because she said that Winnie felt that something like a frog is small and usually doesn’t live as long as humans would. Also because the listened to her like her problems and stuff that’s why I agree with Alex I!

  34.    Fiona Fujtia — December 17, 2009 @ 9:58 pm

Yes, the choice surprised me because she used the whole bottle to keep the toad safe. Now she doesn’t have any more for herself, but she thought she had more at the spring. She made that choice because she wanted to keep that toad safe. She always talk to that toad, even though it doesn’t know what she’s saying and the Winnie doesn’t know what its saying.
This choice made me surprised because I thought that she was going to drink the water when she turns 17 and marry with Jesse forever. But she didn’t drink the water from the spring to become immortal. And marry Jesse. She made the choice not to drink the water because she took Tuck’s advice not to drink the water because it’s better to have a normal life than having an IMMORTAL life so she took Tuck’s advice.
No i would drink the water because you could live with your love to be happy with, and keep and have kids. Then have the kids drink the water whenever they want to drink it.

  35.    JAMES — December 17, 2009 @ 10:21 pm

Winnie’s choice of pouring the everlasting water on the toad surprised me because I thought she was going to drink the water when she was seventeen and live a happy life with Jesse Tuck. In my honest opinion I would have not given the everlasting water to the toad because what is the point of giving the water to a toad that really has no idea that it is immortal. Why should Winnie give some everlasting water to a toad that has no idea that it is going to live forever? I think that is a big waste of something so precious, but by making the story end with the toad drinking the water it turned out way more interesting.

I think Winnie made this choice because the toad was very special to her. Many times the toad was there for her problems. The toad was the only one to talk to because she did not have any friends. The toad was her first friend and only because the other kids did not like to play with her. The toad was not just a regular toad but it was a toad who she could talk and Winnie considered the toad as a friend.

The reason why the toad was so significant her life that she felt she needed to protect him/her forever was that no matter how small or how disgusting others thought of it, it was still her toad and her friend no matter what (liked I explained above).

Yes the choice that Winnie made surprised me because I thought that Winnie was going to live happily ever after with Jesse Tuck. I really never expected it to go this way because I thought this would end up a bit happier, but instead it ended up with Winnie dying and an important message with it.

I think the reason why Winnie ended up not drinking the everlasting water was because when Winnie got older she realized that living forever might not be a good thing. When Winnie got older she probably just wanted to move on in life instead of being a stone or a rock on the side of the road that does not change or move.

I would have made the same decision because I would never want to be a certain age forever, I would want to experience everything and then when I am old I would just be satisfied of the life I lived. I know even though it sounds very good I know that I would regret it. It would probably be boring just doing the same things every day. That is why I think Winnie made the smart choice.

  36.    Michelle Fridman — December 17, 2009 @ 10:50 pm

    Michelle Period 1-2

I agree with Alex. As she said “It couldn’t’t do anything to save himself so she brought him inside the fence

and poured the water on him. She knew that if she wanted to drink the water she could get more by the tree. She felt she needed the toad because he was the only thing that she could talk to about anything and know he won’t tell.” Winnie did a wise choice. She felt he was the closest friend she would ever have. I think she poured it on him because he was helpless. He was just a toad. Winnie wanted to live a normal life. As the dog was going to hurt the toad, what could he do? The toad would linger forever and have Winnie in his heart no matter how old she was [and dead or alive]. The toad was that essential. He listened to her as if human.

I wasn’t surprised that Winnie didn’t drink it. She already wasted the water and what point was it to live forever. Like Tuck said, ” First, you’ll enjoy it, then you will go crazy”. Besides, where would she find Jesse? She couldn’t go find him or any of the Tucks. She was under her parents’ custody because she was an accomplice. I would do the same as Winnie. Why would I want to live a life being part of superstition? I don’t need to sit and watch normal people while I was an abnormal fool who drank water that makes you immortal I couldn’t change my life. I would be like Winnie and not drink it.

  37.    CHRISTIAN S — December 19, 2009 @ 7:17 pm

Winnie pouring the water on the toad did not surprise me because the toad was like her security blanket. The toad was the one thing she could depend on. Winnie always poured out all her inner most feelings and emotions to the toad and she loved him.

Even though Winnies death was very sad, I felt good for her because she went thru the circle of life rather than being like a rock on the side of the road. It did not surprise me at all that she did not drink the water. She lived her life the way it should have been lived.

  38.    dwayne — December 20, 2009 @ 4:37 pm

Yes in the story of TUCK EVERLASTING Winnie suprised me when she grabbed the little jar of the everlasting water that Jesse gave her and poured the water on the toad, because I thought that Winnie would go on with the idea Jesse made in chapter 14 on waiting until she was 17 then drinking the water and living forever with jesse until the end of the world.
Winnie made the choice of pouring the everlasting water on the toad because, she really cared about the toad. The toad was the only living thing she can talk to when she was incaged in her yard and when she saw the toad was about to be eaten by the dog she felt sorry for the toad so she poured the water on the toad so the toad would never be harmed again.
the dision winnie made not to drink the water and lived forever because Winnie when she was 17 relized that jesse, Miles,Agues, and Mae Tuck were not coming back she probrobly thought what is the point to drink the water if shes not going to marry Jesse that was the plan so that is why she didn’t drink the water. Another reason is she probrobly meet some one else with the last name of jackson.
I would make the same dicision that Winnie made of not drinking the water because why if you drink the water and live forever and just meet people then 20 or 30 years later there died and then you are alone again.
I agree with Jack in that he was suprised how Winnie poured the precisious water on the toad. It’s just a toad not a person it can’t talk it’s very small and it gives you worts. That is why I agree with Jack.

  39.    stephanie — December 21, 2009 @ 9:39 pm

yes the suprised me because i didnt think that she would give the water to the toad. And she would drink the water to go away to jesse. But i was also gave the water to the toad and when Mae and Miles game to the city two years after winnie died and Miles was happy that winnie didnt drink the water Miles said “good girl” because he told wnnie not to drink the water because after a while you drink the water then you wish that yo never drink the water in the first place.

  40.    Divya — January 3, 2010 @ 4:47 pm

The choice did surprise me but not for the fact that she didn’t drink the water herself. I t surprised me because I thought that she would give the water who would actually want it. Plus why would she waist her water giving it to a toad that probably isn’t a thing that is important to her. The toad was probably important to her because the toad seemed to have hung around the Winnie’s house a lot and she seemed to have grown a friendship with the toad. Also she felt like she had to save the toad and since the toad is probably not going to make a difference in the world, its okay because a toad doesn’t take up as much space in the world as a person. If a person is going to take up space in the world they should at least make a difference.

It didn’t surprise me because like in my last answer, the talk that Tuck and her had. Tuck was so persuasive and he really gave good reasons for why Winnie not to drink the water. Also Miles told Winnie that living forever is not that fun. I would have made the same decisions because even if Jesse, Mae, Miles, and Tuck said that living forever and never getting hurt or falling sick was great I still wouldn’t drink the water. I want to live my life normally not some irregular way that I might not even like at the end of the day. Plus like I said in the last bog answer I want to live all the stages of my life.
